     Numbers

Chapter 1

1 Yahwah [YHWH] spoke to Moshe [Moses] in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

2 Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls,

3 from twenty years old and upward. All that are able to go forth to war in Yisrayah, you and Aaron will number them by their hosts.

4 There will be a man of every tribe with you, every one head of his fathers' house.

5 These are the names of the men that will stand with you. Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur.

6 Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

16 These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers. They were the heads of the thousands of Yisrayah [Israel].

17 Moshe and Aaron took these men that are mentioned by name.

18 They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month. They declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

19 As Yahwah commanded Moshe, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20 The children of Reuben, Yisrayah's first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

21 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

22 Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

23 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

24 Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

25 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

26 Of the children of Yahudah [Judah], their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

27 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Yahudah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

28 Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

29 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

30 Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

31 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

32 Of the children of Yahusef [Joseph], namely, of the children of Ephrayim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

33 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephrayim, were forty thousand and five hundred.

34 Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

35 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

36 Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

37 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

38 Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

39 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.

40 Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

41 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

42 Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war.

43 Those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

44 These are those who were numbered, whom Moshe and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Yisrayah, being twelve men. They were each one for his fathers' house.

45 So all those were numbered of the children of Yisrayah by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Yisrayah.

46 Even all those who were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

48 For Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

49 Only the tribe of Levi you will not number, neither you will take the sum of them among the children of Yisrayah.

50 Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongs to it. They will bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof. They will minister to it, and will camp round about the tabernacle.

51 When the tabernacle sets forward, the Levites will take it down. When the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites will set it up. The stranger that comes near will be put to death.

52 The children of Yisrayah will pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts.

53 But the Levites will camp round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there is no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Yisrayah. The Levites will keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

54 Thus did the children of Yisrayah. According to all Yahwah commanded Moshe, so they did.

Chapter 2

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe and to Aaron, saying:

15 His host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

16 All that were numbered of the camp of Reuben were a hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, according to their hosts. They will set forth second.

17 Then the tent of meeting will set forward, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps. As they camp, so they will set forward, every man in his place by their standards.

18 On the west side will be the standard of the camp of Ephrayim according to their hosts. The prince of the children of Ephrayim will be Elishama the son of Ammihud.

19 His host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred.

20 Next to him will be the tribe of Manasseh. The prince of the children of Manasseh will be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

21 His host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

31 All that were numbered of the camp of Dan were a hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They will set forth hindmost by their standards.

32 These are those who were numbered of the children of Yisrayah by their fathers' houses. All that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Yisrayah, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

34 Thus did the children of Yisrayah. According to all Yahwah commanded Moshe, so they camped by their standards, and so they set forward, every one by their families, according to their fathers' houses.

Chapter 3

1 Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moshe in the day Yahwah spoke with Moshe in mount Sinai.

2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the first-born, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests that were anointed, whom He consecrated to minister in the priest's office.

4 Nadab and Abihu died before Yahwah, when they offered strange fire before Yahwah, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father.

5 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him.

7 They will keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

8 They will keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Yisrayah, to do the service of the tabernacle.

9 Give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Yisrayah.

10 Appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will keep their priesthood. The stranger that comes near will be put to death.

11 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

12 Behold, I took the Levites from among the children of Yisrayah instead of all the first-born that opens the womb among the children of Yisrayah. The Levites are mine.

13 For all the first-born are mine. On the day I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed to me all the first-born in Yisrayah, both man and beast. Mine they are. I am Yahwah.

14 Yahwah spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, saying:

15 Number the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, by their families. Every male from a month old and upward you will number them.

16 Moshe numbered them according to the Word of Yahwah, as he was commanded.

17 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohas, and Merari.

18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.

19 The sons of Kohas by their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

20 The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses.

21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites. These are the families of the Gershonites.

22 Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.

23 The families of the Gershonites will camp behind the tabernacle westward.

24 The prince of the fathers' house of the Gershonites will be Eliasaph the son of Lael.

25 The charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting will be the tabernacle, the Tent, the covering thereof, the screen for the door of the tent of meeting,

26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the court which is by the tabernacle, by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.

27 Of Kohas was the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites. These are the families of the Kohasites.

28 According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.

29 The families of the sons of Kohas will camp on the side of the tabernacle southward.

30 The prince of the fathers' house of the families of the Kohasites will be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.

31 Their charge will be the ark, the table, the candlestick, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, the screen, and all the service thereof.

32 Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest will be prince of the princes of the Levites, and have the oversight of those who keep the charge of the sanctuary.

33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites. These are the families of Merari.

34 Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred.

35 The prince of the fathers' house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail, they will camp on the side of the tabernacle northward.

36 The appointed charge of the sons of Merari will be the boards of the tabernacle, the bars thereof, the pillars thereof, the sockets thereof, all the instruments thereof, all the service thereof,

37 the pillars of the court round about, their sockets, their pins, and their cords.

38 Those that camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, will be Moshe, Aaron, and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Yisrayah. The stranger that comes near will be put to death.

39 All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Yahwah, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.

40 Yahwah said to Moshe: Number all the first-born males of the children of Yisrayah from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.

41 Take the Levites for me (I am Yahwah) instead of all the first-born among the children of Yisrayah, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Yisrayah.

42 Moshe numbered, as Yahwah commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Yisrayah.

43 All the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.

44 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

45 Take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Yisrayah, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle. The Levites are mine. I am Yahwah.

46 For the redemption of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the first-born of the children of Yisrayah, that are over and above the number of the Levites,

47 you will take five shekels apiece by the poll. After the shekel of the sanctuary you will take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs).

48 Give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons.

49 Moshe took the redemption-money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites.

50 From the first-born of the children of Yisrayah he took the money, a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary.

51 Moshe gave the redemption-money to Aaron and to his sons, according to the Word of Yahwah, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

Chapter 4

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, and to Aaron, saying:

2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohas from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' houses,

3 from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting.

4 This is the service of the sons of Kohas in the tent of meeting, about the most holy things.

5 When the camp sets forward, Aaron will go in, and his sons, and they will take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it.

6 They will put a covering of sealskin thereon, and will spread a cloth all of blue over it, and will put in the staves thereof.

7 They will spread a cloth of blue upon the table of showbread, put the dishes thereon, the spoons, the bowls, and the cups wherewith to pour out. The continual bread will be thereon.

8 They will spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof.

9 They will take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, its lamps, its snuffers, its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister to it.

10 They will put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and will put it upon the frame.

11 They will spread a cloth of blue upon the golden altar, cover it with a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof.

12 They will take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, cover them with a covering of sealskin, and put them on the frame.

13 They will take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon.

14 They will put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar. They will spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof.

15 When Aaron and his sons make an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, the camp is set forward. After that, the sons of Kohas will come to bear it, but they will not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohas in the tent of meeting.

16 The charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest will be the oil for the light, the sweet incense, the continual meal-offering, the anointing oil, the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that is therein, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof.

17 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, and to Aaron, saying:

18 Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohasites from among the Levites.

19 But thus do to them, that they may live and not die, when they approach to the most holy things. Aaron and his sons will go in, and appoint them every one to his service, to his burden.

20 They will not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.

21 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

22 Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses, by their families.

23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old you will number them, all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting.

24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens.

25 They will bear the curtains of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, its covering, the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, the screen for the door of the tent of meeting,

26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, their cords, and all the instruments of their service. Whatsoever will be done with them, therein they will serve.

27 All the service of the sons of the Gershonites will be at the commandment of Aaron and his sons, in all their burden, and in all their service. Appoint to them in charge all their burden.

28 This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their charge will be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29 As for the sons of Merari, you will number them by their families, by their fathers' houses.

30 From thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old you will number them, every one that enters upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting.

31 This is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting. The boards of the tabernacle, the bars thereof, the pillars thereof, the sockets thereof,

32 the pillars of the court round about, their sockets, their pins, their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service. Appoint by name the instruments of the charge of their burden.

33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

34 Moshe, Aaron, and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohasites by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

35 from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting.

36 Those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

37 These are those who were numbered of the families of the Kohasites, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moshe and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Yahwah by Moshe.

38 Those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, their families, and by their fathers' houses,

39 from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting,

40 even those that were numbered of them, by their families, by their fathers' houses, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

41 These are those who were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moshe and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Yahwah.

42 Those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers' houses,

43 from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting,

44 even those that were numbered of them by their families, were three thousand and two hundred.

45 These are those who were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moshe and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Yahwah by Moshe.

46 All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aaron and the princes of Yisrayah numbered, by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

47 from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service, and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting,

48 even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

49 According to the commandment of Yahwah they were numbered by Moshe, every one according to his service, and according to his burden. Thus were they numbered of him, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

Chapter 5

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Command the children of Yisrayah, that they put out of the camp every leper, every one that has an issue, and whosoever is unclean by the dead.

3 You will put out both male and female, put them without the camp, that they not defile the camp in the midst whereof I dwell.

4 The children of Yisrayah did so, and put them out without the camp. As Yahwah spoke to Moshe, so the children of Yisrayah did.

5 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

6 Speak to the children of Yisrayah; When a man or woman commits any sin that men commit, so as to trespass against Yahwah, and that soul is guilty,

7 he will confess his sin he did. He will make restitution for his guilt in full, add the fifth part thereof to it, and give it to him in respect of whom he is guilty.

8 But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made to Yahwah will be the priest's. Besides the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement will be made for him.

9 Every heave-offering of all the holy things of the children of Yisrayah, which they present to the priest, will be his.

10 Every man's hallowed things will be his. Whatsoever any man gives the priest, it will be his.

11 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

12 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them; If any man's wife go aside, commit a trespass against him,

13 lies with a man carnally, and it is hid from the eyes of her husband, and is kept close, yet she is defiled, but there is no witness against her, and she was not taken in the act;

14 if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she is defiled; or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, yet she is not defiled;

15 then the man will bring his wife to the priest. He will bring her oblation for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal. He will pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon, for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

16 The priest will bring her near, and set her before Yahwah.

17 The priest will take holy water in an earthen vessel. The priest will take of the dust on the floor of the tabernacle, and put it into the water.

18 The priest will set the woman before Yahwah, let the hair of the woman's head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering of jealousy. The priest will have in his hand the water of bitterness that causes the curse.

19 The priest will cause her to swear, and will say to the woman: If no man laid with you, and if you did not go aside to uncleanness, being under your husband, be you free from this water of bitterness that causes the curse.

20 But if you did go aside, being under your husband, and if you are defiled, and some man laid with you besides your husband.

21 The priest will cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priest will say to the woman: Yahwah make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Yahwah makes your thigh to fall away, and your body to swell.

22 This water that causes the curse will go into your bowels, make your body to swell, and your thigh to fall away. The woman will say: Amein, Amein.

23 The priest will write these curses in a book, and he will blot them out into the water of bitterness.

24 He will make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causes the curse. The water that causes the curse will enter into her and become bitter.

25 The priest will take the meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, will wave the meal-offering before Yahwah, and bring it to the altar.

26 The priest will take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial thereof, burn it upon the altar, and afterward will make the woman drink the water.

27 When he makes her drink the water, then it will come to pass, if she is defiled, and did commit a trespass against her husband, the water that causes the curse will enter into her, become bitter, her body will swell, and her thigh will fall away. The woman will be a curse among her people.

28 If the woman is not defiled, but is clean, then she will be free, and will conceive seed.

29 This is the torah of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goes aside, and is defiled;

30 or when the spirit of jealousy comes upon a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then he will set the woman before Yahwah, and the priest will execute upon her all this torah.

31 The man will be free from iniquity, and that woman will bear her iniquity.

Chapter 6

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them; When either man or woman will make a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to Yahwah,

3 he will separate himself from wine and strong drink. He will drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink. Neither will he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes, or dried.

4 All the days of his separation he will eat nothing that is made of the grape-vine, from the kernels even to the husk.

5 All the days of his vow of separation there will no razor come upon his head. Until the days are fulfilled, in which he separates himself to Yahwah, he will be holy. He will let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

6 All the days he separates himself to Yahwah he will not come near to a dead body.

7 He will not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die, because his separation to Yahwah is upon his head.

8 All the days of his separation he is holy to Yahwah.

9 If any man die very suddenly beside him, and he defile the head of his separation, then he will shave his head in the day of his cleansing. On the seventh day he will shave it.

10 On the eighth day he will bring two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tent of meeting.

11 The priest will offer one for a sin-offering, the other for a burnt-offering, and make atonement for him, for that he sinned by reason of the dead, and will hallow his head that same day.

12 He will separate to Yahwah the days of his separation, and will bring a he-lamb a year old for a trespass-offering. But the former days will be void, because his separation was defiled.

13 This is the torah of the Nazirite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled. He will be brought to the door of the tent of meeting.

14 He will offer his oblation to Yahwah, one he-lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt-offering, one ewe-lamb a year old without blemish for a sin-offering, one ram without blemish for peace-offerings,

15 a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, unleavened wafers anointed with oil, their meal-offering, and their drink-offerings.

16 The priest will present them before Yahwah, offer his sin-offering, and his burnt-offering.

17 He will offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace-offerings to Yahwah, with the basket of unleavened bread. The priest will offer also the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.

18 The Nazirite will shave the head of his separation at the door of the tent of meeting, will take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace-offerings.

19 The priest will take the boiled shoulder of the ram, one unleavened cake out of the basket, one unleavened wafer, and will put them upon the hands of the Nazirite, after he shaves the head of his separation.

20 The priest will wave them for a wave-offering before Yahwah. This is holy for the priest, together with the wave-breast and heave-thigh. After that the Nazirite may drink wine.

21 This is the torah of the Nazirite who vows, and of his oblation to Yahwah for his separation, besides what he is able to get. According to his vow which he vows, so he must do after the torah of his separation.

22 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

23 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying; In this way you will bless the children of Yisrayah. You will say to them:

24 Yahwah bless you, and keep you.

25 Yahwah make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.

26 Yahwah lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

27 So they will put my Name upon the children of Yisrayah, and I will bless them.

89 When Moshe went into the tent of meeting to speak with Him, he heard the Voice speaking to him from above the mercy-seat that was upon the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim. He spoke to him.

Chapter 8

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Speak to Aaron, and say to him; When you light the lamps, the seven lamps will give light in front of the candlestick.

3 Aaron did so. He lighted the lamps thereof so as to give light in front of the candlestick, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

4 This was the work of the candlestick, beaten work of gold. To the base thereof, and to the flowers thereof, it was beaten work. According to the pattern Yahwah showed Moshe, so he made the candlestick.

5 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

6 Take the Levites from among the children of Yisrayah, and cleanse them.

7 Thus you will do to them, to cleanse them. Sprinkle the water of expiation upon them, let them cause a razor to pass over all their flesh, let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves.

8 Then let them take a young bullock, and its meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil. Take another young bullock for a sin-offering.

9 Present the Levites before the tent of meeting. Assemble the whole congregation of the children of Yisrayah.

10 Present the Levites before Yahwah. The children of Yisrayah will lay their hands upon the Levites.

11 Aaron will offer the Levites before Yahwah for a wave-offering, on the behalf of the children of Yisrayah, that it may be theirs to do the service of Yahwah.

12 The Levites will lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks. Offer the one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, to Yahwah, to make atonement for the Levites.

13 Set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for a wave-offering to Yahwah.

14 Thus you will separate the Levites from among the children of Yisrayah. The Levites are mine.

15 After that the Levites will go in to do the service of the tent of meeting. Cleanse them, and offer them for a wave-offering.

16 They are wholly given to me from among the children of Yisrayah. Instead of all that opens the womb, even the first-born of all the children of Yisrayah, I take them to me.

17 For all the first-born among the children of Yisrayah are mine, both man and beast. On the day I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself.

18 I take the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Yisrayah.

19 I give the Levites, as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Yisrayah, to do the service of the children of Yisrayah in the tent of meeting. And to make atonement for the children of Yisrayah, that there is no plague among the children of Yisrayah when the children of Yisrayah come near to the sanctuary.

20 Thus Moshe, Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, did to the Levites. According to all Yahwah commanded Moshe touching the Levites, so the children of Yisrayah did to them.

21 The Levites purified themselves from sin, and they washed their clothes. Aaron offered them for a wave-offering before Yahwah, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.

22 After that the Levites went in to do their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron, and before his sons. As Yahwah commanded Moshe concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

23 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

24 This is what belongs to the Levites. From twenty and five years old and upward they will go in to wait upon the service in the work of the tent of meeting.

25 From the age of fifty years they will cease waiting upon the work, and will serve no more,

26 but will minister with their brothers in the tent of meeting, to keep the charge, and will do no service. Thus you will do to the Levites touching their charges.

Chapter 9

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

2 Moreover let the children of Yisrayah keep the passover in its appointed season.

3 In the fourteenth day of this month, between the evenings, you will keep it in its appointed season. Keep it according to all the statutes of it, and according to all the ordinances thereof.

4 Moshe spoke to the children of Yisrayah, that they should keep the passover.

5 They kept the passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, between the evenings, in the wilderness of Sinai. According to all Yahwah commanded Moshe, so the children of Yisrayah did.

6 There were certain men, who were unclean by reason of the dead body of a man, so they could not keep the passover on that day. They came before Moshe and before Aaron on that day.

7 Those men said to him: We are unclean by reason of the dead body of a man. Why are we kept back, that we may not offer the oblation of Yahwah in its appointed season among the children of Yisrayah?

8 Moshe said to them: Stay, that I may hear what Yahwah will command concerning you.

9 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

10 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, saying: If any man of you or of your generations is unclean by reason of a dead body, or is on a journey afar off, yet he will keep the passover to Yahwah.

11 In the second month on the fourteenth day between the evenings they will keep it. They will eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

12 They will leave none of it to the morning, nor break a bone thereof. They will keep it according to all the statute of the passover.

13 But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and forbears to keep the passover, that soul is cut off from his people. Because he did not offer the oblation of Yahwah in its appointed season, that man will bear his sin.

14 If a stranger sojourns among you and will keep the passover to Yahwah, according to the statute of the passover, and according to the ordinance thereof, so he will do. You will have one statute, both for the sojourner, and for him that is born in the land.

15 On the day the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle, even the tent of the testimony. At even it was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until morning.

16 So it was always. The cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night.

17 Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Yisrayah journeyed. And in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Yisrayah camped.

18 At the commandment of Yahwah the children of Yisrayah journeyed, and at the commandment of Yahwah they camped. As long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they remained camped.

19 When the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Yisrayah kept the charge of Yahwah, and did not journey.

20 Sometimes the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle. Then they remained camped according to the commandment of Yahwah, and they journeyed according to the commandment of Yahwah.

21 Sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning. When the cloud was taken up in the morning, they journeyed. Or if it continued by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.

22 Whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, abiding thereon, the children of Yisrayah remained camped, and did not journey. But when it was taken up, they journeyed.

23 At the commandment of Yahwah they camped, and at the commandment of Yahwah they journeyed. They kept the charge of Yahwah, at the commandment of Yahwah by Moshe.

Chapter 10

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Make two trumpets of silver. Make them of beaten work. Use them for the calling of the congregation, and for the journeying of the camps.

3 When they blow them, all the congregation will gather themselves to you at the door of the tent of meeting.

4 If they blow but one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Yisrayah, will gather themselves to you.

5 When you blow an alarm [teruah], the camps that lie on the east side will take their journey.

6 When you blow an alarm [teruah] the second time, the camps that lie on the south side will take their journey. They will blow an alarm [teruah] for their journeys.

7 But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you will blow, but you will not sound an alarm.

8 The sons of Aaron, the priests, will blow the trumpets. They are to you for a statute for ever throughout your generations.

9 When you go to war in your land against the adversary that oppresses you, you will sound an alarm with the trumpets. You will be remembered before Yahwah your Father, and you will be saved from your enemies.

10 Also in the day of your gladness, in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you will blow the trumpets over your burnt-offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace-offerings. They will be to you for a memorial before your Father. I am Yahwah your Father.

11 It came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony.

12 The children of Yisrayah set forward according to their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai. The cloud abode in the wilderness of Paran.

13 They took their first journey according to the commandment of Yahwah by Moshe.

14 In the first place the standard of the camp of the children of Yahudah set forward according to their hosts. Over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

15 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar.

16 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.

17 The tabernacle was taken down. The sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the tabernacle, set forward.

18 The standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts. Over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur.

19 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

20 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

21 The Kohasites set forward, bearing the sanctuary. The others set up the tabernacle against their coming.

22 The standard of the camp of the children of Ephrayim set forward according to their hosts. Over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.

23 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

24 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.

25 The standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts. Over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammi-shaddai.

26 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran.

27 Over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.

28 Thus were the journeyings of the children of Yisrayah according to their hosts. They set forward.

29 Moshe said to Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moshe's father-in-law: We are journeying to the place of which Yahwah said; I give it you. Come with us, and we will do you good, for Yahwah spoke good concerning Yisrayah.

30 He said to him: I will not go, but I will depart to my own land, and to my kindred.

31 He said: Do not leave us, I pray you. Forasmuch as you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, you will be to us instead of eyes.

32 It will be, if you go with us, yea, it will be, what good soever Yahwah do to us, the same we will do to you.

33 They set forward from the mount of Yahwah three days journey. The ark of the covenant of Yahwah went before them three days journey, to seek out a resting-place for them.

34 The cloud of Yahwah was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp.

35 It came to pass, when the ark set forward, Moshe said: Rise up, O Yahwah, and let your enemies be scattered. Let those who hate you flee before you.

36 When it rested, he said: Return, O Yahwah, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Yisrayah.

Chapter 11

1 The people were as murmurers, speaking evil in the ears of Yahwah. When Yahwah heard it, his anger was kindled. The fire of Yahwah burnt among them, and devoured in the uttermost part of the camp.

2 The people cried to Moshe. Moshe prayed to Yahwah, and the fire abated.

3 The name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of Yahwah burnt among them.

4 The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly. The children of Yisrayah also wept again, and said: Who will give us flesh to eat?

5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic.

6 But now our soul is dried away. There is nothing at all save this manna to look upon.

7 The manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium.

8 The people went about, gathered it, ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. The taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

9 When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

10 Moshe heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent. The anger of Yahwah was kindled greatly, and Moshe was displeased.

11 Moshe said to Yahwah: Why did you deal ill with your servant? How have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people upon me?

12 Did I conceive all this people? Did I bring them forth, that you should say to me: Carry them in your bosom, as a nursing-father carries the sucking child, to the land you swore to their fathers?

13 How should I have flesh to give to all this people? They weep to me, saying: Give us flesh, that we may eat.

14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

15 If you deal thus with me, kill me out of hand, I pray you, if I found favor in your sight. Let me not see my wretchedness.

16 Yahwah said to Moshe: Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Yisrayah, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them. Bring them to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you.

17 I will come down, and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is upon you, and will put it upon them. They will bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone.

18 Say to the people: Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and you will eat flesh. You wept in the ears of Yahwah, saying: Who will give us flesh to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt. Therefore Yahwah will give you flesh, and you will eat.

19 You will not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,

20 but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you. You rejected Yahwah who is among you, and wept before Him, saying: Why did we come forth out of Egypt?

21 Moshe said: The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen. You said: I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

22 Will flocks and herds be slain for them, to suffice them? Or will all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

23 Yahwah said to Moshe: Is Yahwah's hand waxed short? Now you will see whether my word will come to pass to you, or not.

24 Moshe went out, and told the people the words of Yahwah. He gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the Tent.

25 Yahwah came down in the cloud, spoke to him, took of the Spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy elders. It came to pass, they prophesied when the Spirit rested upon them, but they did so no more.

26 But there remained two men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. The Spirit rested upon them. They were of those who were written, but did not go out to the Tent. They prophesied in the camp.

27 There ran a young man, and told Moshe, and said: Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

28 Yahushua the son of Nun, the minister of Moshe, one of his chosen men, answered, and said: My master Moshe, forbid them.

29 Moshe said to him: Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all Yahwah's people were prophets, that Yahwah would put his Spirit upon them!

30 Moshe got him into the camp, he, and the elders of Yisrayah.

31 There went forth a wind from Yahwah. It brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth.

32 The people rose up all that day, all the night, and all the next day, to gather the quails. He that gathered least gathered ten homers. They spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

33 While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of Yahwah was kindled against the people. Yahwah smote the people with a very great plague.

34 The name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted flesh.

35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth, and they abode at Hazeroth.

Chapter 12

1 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moshe because of the Cushite woman he married, for he had married a Cushite woman.

2 They said: Has Yahwah indeed spoken only with Moshe? Has he not spoken also with us? Yahwah heard it.

3 Now the man Moshe was very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth.

4 Yahwah spoke suddenly to Moshe, to Aaron, and to Miriam: Come out you three to the tent of meeting. They three came out.

5 Yahwah came down in a pillar of cloud, stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam. They both came forth.

6 He said: Hear now my words. If there is a prophet among you, I Yahwah will make myself known to him in a vision, I will speak with him in a dream.

7 My servant Moshe is not so. He is faithful in all my house.

8 I speak mouth to mouth with him, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches. He beheld the form of Yahwah. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moshe?

9 The anger of Yahwah was kindled against them. He departed.

10 The cloud removed from over the Tent. Behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. Aaron looked upon Miriam. Behold, she was leprous.

11 Aaron said to Moshe: Oh, my master, I pray you, do not lay sin upon us, for we did foolishly, and we sinned.

12 Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother's womb.

13 Moshe cried to Yahwah, saying: Heal her, O Father, I beg you.

14 Yahwah said to Moshe: If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside the camp seven days, and after that she will be brought in again.

15 Miriam was shut up without the camp seven days. The people did not journey till Miriam was brought in again.

16 Afterward the people journeyed from Hazeroth, and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

Chapter 13

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Yisrayah. Of every tribe of their fathers you will send a man, every one a prince among them.

3 Moshe sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahwah. All of them men who were heads of the children of Yisrayah.

4 These were their names. Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 Of the tribe of Yahudah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Yosef.

8 Of the tribe of Ephrayim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 Of the tribe of Yahusef, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 These are the names of the men Moshe sent to spy out the land. Moshe called Hoshea the son of Nun: Yahushua.

17 Moshe sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them: Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country.

18 See the land, what it is. The people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many.

19 What the land is they dwell in, whether it is good or bad. What cities they are they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds.

20 What the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

22 They went up by the South, and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 They came to the valley of Eshcol, cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a staff between two. They brought also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster the children of Yisrayah cut down from there.

25 They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

26 They went, came to Moshe, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh. They brought back word to them, to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

27 They told him, and said: We came to the land where you sent us. It surely flows with milk and honey, and this is the fruit of it.

28 However the people that dwell in the land are strong, the cities are fortified, and very great. Moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Yordan [Jordan River].

30 Caleb stilled the people before Moshe, and said: Let us go up at once, and possess it. We are well able to overcome it.

31 But the men that went up with him said: We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.

32 They brought up an evil report to the children of Yisrayah of the land they spied out, saying: The land through which we went to spy it out is a land that eats up its inhabitants. All the people we saw in it are men of great stature.

33 We saw the Nephilim there, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim [fallen ones]. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Chapter 14

1 All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried. The people wept that night.

2 All the children of Yisrayah murmured against Moshe, and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them: Would that we died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we died in this wilderness!

3 Why does Yahwah bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey. Were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

4 They said one to another: Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

5 Moshe and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Yisrayah.

6 Yahushua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.

7 They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, saying: The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

8 If Yahwah delight in us, He will bring us into this land, and give it to us. A land which flows with milk and honey.

9 Only do not rebel against Yahwah, neither fear the people of the land. They are bread for us. Their defence is removed from over them, and Yahwah is with us. Do not fear them.

10 But all the congregation wanted to stone them with stones. The glory of Yahwah appeared in the tent of meeting to all the children of Yisrayah.

11 Yahwah said to Moshe: How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs I wrought among them?

12 I will smite them with the pestilence, disinherit them, and make a nation of you greater and mightier than they.

13 Moshe said to Yahwah: Then the Egyptians will hear it. You brought up this people in your might from among them.

14 They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They heard that you Yahwah are in the midst of this people. You Yahwah are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them. You go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

15 Now if you will kill this people as one man, then the nations which heard the fame of you will speak, saying:

16 Because Yahwah was not able to bring this people into the land He swore to them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.

17 I pray you, let the power of Yahwah be great, according as you spoke, saying:

18 Yahwah is slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.

19 I pray you, pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your lovingkindness, and according as you forgave this people from Egypt even until now.

20 Yahwah said: I pardoned according to your word.

21 But in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth is filled with the glory of Yahwah;

22 because all those men saw my glory, and my signs I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet they tempted me these ten times, and do not hearken to my voice;

23 surely they will not see the land I swore to their fathers, neither will any of those who despised me see it.

24 My servant Caleb had another spirit with him and followed me fully, I will bring him into the land where he went. His seed will possess it.

25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley. Tomorrow you turn, and get into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.

26 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, and to Aaron, saying:

27 How long will I bear with this evil congregation, who murmur against me? I hear the murmurings of the children of Yisrayah, which they murmur against me.

28 Say to them: As I live, says Yahwah, surely as you spoke in my ears, so I will do to you.

29 Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness. All that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, that murmured against me,

30 surely you will not come into the land concerning which I swore I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Yahushua the son of Nun.

31 Your little ones, that you said should be a prey, I will bring them in, and they will know the land you rejected.

32 But as for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness.

33 Your children will be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and will bear your whoredoms, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.

34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities. Even forty years, and you will know my alienation.

35 I, Yahwah, spoke. Surely I will do this to all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they will be consumed, and there they will die.

36 The men whom Moshe sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,

37 even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahwah.

38 Yahushua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

39 Moshe told these words to all the children of Yisrayah. The people mourned greatly.

40 They rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: Lo, we are here, and will go up to the place Yahwah promised. For we sinned.

41 Moshe said: Why do you transgress the commandment of Yahwah now, seeing it will not prosper?

42 Do not go up, for Yahwah is not among you, or you will be smitten down before your enemies.

43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you are turned back from following Yahwah, therefore Yahwah will not be with you.

44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahwah, and Moshe, did not depart out of the camp.

45 Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who dwelt in that mountain, smote them, and beat them down, even to Hormah.

Chapter 15

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them: When you are come into the land of your habitations, which I give to you,

3 and will make an offering by fire to Yahwah, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, to accomplish a vow, or as a freewill-offering, or in your set feasts, to make a sweet savor to Yahwah, of the herd, or of the flock;

4 then he who offers his oblation will offer to Yahwah a meal-offering of a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil.

5 Wine for the drink-offering, the fourth part of a hin, you will prepare with the burnt-offering, or for the sacrifice, for each lamb.

6 Or for a ram, you will prepare for a meal-offering two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the third part of a hin of oil.

7 For the drink-offering you will offer the third part of a hin of wine, of a sweet savor to Yahwah.

8 When you prepare a bullock for a burnt-offering, or for a sacrifice, to accomplish a vow, or for peace-offerings to Yahwah;

9 then he will offer with the bullock a meal-offering of three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with half a hin of oil.

10 Offer half a hin of wine for the drink-offering, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahwah.

11 Thus will it be done for each bullock, or for each ram, or for each of the he-lambs, or of the kids.

12 According to the number you prepare, so you will do to every one according to their number.

13 All that are home-born will do these things after this manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahwah.

14 If a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever may be among you throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahwah. As you do, so he will do.

15 For the assembly, there will be one statute for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you, a statute for ever throughout your generations. As you are, so will the sojourner be before Yahwah.

16 One torah and one ordinance will be for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you.

17 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

18 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them: When you come into the land where I bring you,

19 then it will be, when you eat of the bread of the land, you will offer up a heave-offering to Yahwah.

20 Offer up a cake for a heave-offering of the first of your dough. As the heave-offering of the threshing-floor, so you will heave it.

21 Of the first of your dough give a heave-offering to Yahwah throughout your generations.

22 When you will err, and not observe all these comandments Yahwah spoke to Moshe,

23 even all Yahwah commanded you by Moshe, from the day Yahwah gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations;

24 then it will be, if it is done unwittingly, without the knowledge of the congregation, that all the congregation will offer one young bullock for a burnt-offering, for a sweet savor to Yahwah, with the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof, according to the ordinance, and one he-goat for a sin-offering.

25 The priest will make atonement for all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, and they will be forgiven. For it was an error, and they brought their oblation for their error, an offering made by fire to Yahwah, and their sin-offering before Yahwah.

26 All the congregation of the children of Yisrayah will be forgiven, and the stranger that sojourns among them. For in respect of all the people it was done unwittingly.

27 If one person sin unwittingly, then he will offer a she-goat a year old for a sin-offering.

28 The priest will make atonement for the soul that erred, when he sinned unwittingly, before Yahwah, to make atonement for him. He is forgiven.

29 You will have one torah for him that does anything unwittingly, for him that is home-born among the children of Yisrayah, and for the stranger that sojourns among them.

30 But the soul that does anything with a high hand, whether he is home-born or a sojourner, the same blasphemes Yahwah. That soul is cut off from among his people.

31 He despised the Word of Yahwah, broke His comandments, so that soul is utterly cut off. His iniquity is upon him.

32 While the children of Yisrayah were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day.

33 Those who found him gathering sticks [to sell] brought him to Moshe, Aaron, and to all the congregation.

34 They put him in ward, until it was declared what should be done to him.

35 Yahwah said to Moshe: The man will surely be put to death. All the congregation will stone him with stones without the camp.

36 All the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him to death with stones, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

37 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

38 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and bid them to make fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put a cord of blue upon the fringe of each border.

39 It is to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, remember all the comandments of Yahwah, and do them; that you not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to play the harlot;

40 and that you remember and do all my comandments, and be holy to your Father.

41 I am Yahwah your Father, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your Father. I am Yahwah your Father.

Chapter 16

1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohas, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men.

2 They rose up before Moshe, with certain of the children of Yisrayah, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.

3 They assembled themselves together against Moshe, and against Aaron, and said to them: You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Yahwah is among them. Why then do you lift yourselves up above the assembly of Yahwah?

4 When Moshe heard it, he fell upon his face.

5 He spoke to Korah, and to all his company, saying: In the morning Yahwah will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to Him. Even him whom He chose He will cause to come near to Him.

6 This do: Take your censers, Korah, and all his company.

7 Put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Yahwah tomorrow. It will be the man whom Yahwah chooses, he will be holy. You take too much upon you, you sons of Levi.

8 Moshe said to Korah: Hear now, you sons of Levi.

9 Does it seem a small thing to you, that the Father of Yisrayah separated you from the congregation of Yisrayah, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Yahwah, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

10 That He brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? And you seek the priesthood also?

11 Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against Yahwah. And Aaron, who is he that you murmur against him?

12 Moshe sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. They said: We will not come up.

13 Is it a small thing you brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey [Egypt], to kill us in the wilderness, but you must needs make yourself a prince over us also?

14 Moreover you did not bring us into another land flowing with milk and honey, nor give us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.

15 Moshe was very angry, and said to Yahwah: Do not respect their offering. I did not take one ass from them, neither did I hurt one of them.

16 Moshe said to Korah: Be you and all your company before Yahwah, you, they, and Aaron, tomorrow.

17 Every man take his censer, and put incense upon them. Every man bring his censer before Yahwah, two hundred and fifty censers. You also, and Aaron, each his censer.

18 They took every man his censer, put fire in them, laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moshe and Aaron.

19 Korah assembled all the congregation against them to the door of the tent of meeting. The glory of Yahwah appeared to all the congregation.

20 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, and to Aaron, saying:

21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

22 They fell upon their faces, and said: O Father, the Father of the spirits of all flesh, will one man sin, and you are angry with all the congregation?

23 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

24 Speak to the congregation, saying; Get up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

25 Moshe rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram. The elders of Yisrayah followed him.

26 He spoke to the congregation, saying: Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, unless you are consumed in all their sins.

27 So they got them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.

28 Moshe said: Hereby you will know Yahwah sent me to do all these works, for I did not do them of my own mind.

29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they are visited after the visitation of all men, then Yahwah did not send me.

30 But if Yahwah make a new thing: the ground open its mouth, swallow them up, with all that appertains to them, and they go down alive into the grave: then you will understand these men despised Yahwah.

31 It came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, the ground that was under them tore apart.

32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up: their households, all the men that appertained to Korah, and all their goods.

33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the grave. The earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

34 All Yisrayah that were round about them fled at the cry of them. For they said: Unless the earth swallow us up.

35 Fire came forth from Yahwah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

36 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

37 Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire yonder. For they are holy,

38 even the censers of these sinners against their own lives. Let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar. They offered them before Yahwah, therefore they are holy. They will be a sign to the children of Yisrayah.

39 Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, which those who were burnt had offered. They beat them out for a covering of the altar,

40 to be a memorial to the children of Yisrayah, to the end that no stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron come near to burn incense before Yahwah. That he is not as Korah, and as his company, as Yahwah spoke to him by Moshe.

41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah murmured against Moshe, and against Aaron, saying: You killed the people of Yahwah.

42 It came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moshe, and against Aaron, they looked toward the tent of meeting. Behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahwah appeared.

43 Moshe and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.

44 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. They fell upon their faces.

46 Moshe said to Aaron: Take the censer, put fire in it from off the altar, lay incense on it, carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them. For there is wrath gone out from Yahwah, the plague is begun.

47 Aaron took as Moshe spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly. Behold, the plague was begun among the people. He put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

48 He stood between the dead and the living. The plague was stayed.

49 Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.

50 Aaron returned to Moshe to the door of the tent of meeting. The plague was stayed.

Chapter 17

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods. Write every man's name upon his rod.

3 Write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi, for there will be one rod for each head of their fathers' houses.

4 Lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

5 It will come to pass, the rod of the man I choose will bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Yisrayah to cease from me, which they murmur against you.

6 Moshe spoke to the children of Yisrayah. All their princes gave him rods, one for each prince, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods. The rod of Aaron was among their rods.

7 Moshe laid up the rods before Yahwah in the tent of the testimony.

8 It came to pass the next day, Moshe went into the tent of the testimony. Behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, put forth buds, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

9 Moshe brought out all the rods from before Yahwah to all the children of Yisrayah. They looked, and every man took his rod.

10 Yahwah said to Moshe: Put the rod of Aaron back before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion, that you make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die.

11 Thus did Moshe: as Yahwah commanded him, so he did.

12 The children of Yisrayah spoke to Moshe, saying: Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone.

13 Every one that comes near dies, that comes near to the tabernacle of Yahwah. Will we all of us perish?

Chapter 18

1 Yahwah said to Aaron: You, your sons, and your fathers' house with you, will bear the iniquity of the sanctuary. You and your sons with you will bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

2 Your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, bring near with you, that they may be joined to you, and minister to you. But you and your sons with you will be before the tent of the testimony.

3 They will keep your charge, and the charge of all the Tent. Only they will not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary, and to the altar, that they not die, neither they, nor you.

4 They will be joined to you, and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the Tent. A stranger will not come near to you.

5 You will keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar, that there is no more wrath upon the children of Yisrayah.

6 Behold, I took your brothers the Levites from among the children of Yisrayah. To you they are a gift, given to Yahwah, to do the service of the tent of meeting.

7 You and your sons with you will keep your priesthood for everything of the altar, and for that within the veil. You will serve. I give you the priesthood as a service of gift. The stranger that comes near will be put to death.

8 Yahwah spoke to Aaron: Behold, I give you the charge of my heave-offerings, even all the hallowed things of the children of Yisrayah. I give them to you by reason of the anointing, and to your sons, as a portion for ever.

9 This will be yours of the most holy things, reserved from the fire. Every oblation of theirs, even every meal-offering of theirs, every sin-offering of theirs, and every trespass-offering of theirs, which they will render to me, will be most holy for you, and for your sons.

10 As the most holy things you will eat thereof. Every male will eat thereof. It will be holy to you.

11 This is yours: the heave-offering of their gift, even all the wave-offerings of the children of Yisrayah. I give them to you, to your sons, and to your daughters with you, as a portion for ever. Every one that is clean in your house will eat thereof.

12 All the best of the oil, all the best of the vintage, and of the grain, the first-fruits of what they give to Yahwah, I give them to you.

13 The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to Yahwah, is yours. Every one that is clean in your house will eat thereof.

14 Everything devoted in Yisrayah is yours.

15 Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer to Yahwah, both of man and beast is yours. Nevertheless the firstborn of man you will surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts you will redeem.

16 Those that are to be redeemed of them from a month old you will redeem, according to your estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary (the same is twenty gerahs).

17 But you will not redeem the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat. They are holy. You will sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor to Yahwah.

18 The flesh of them is yours, as the wave-breast, and as the right thigh, it is yours.

19 I give you all the heave-offerings of the holy things, which the children of Yisrayah offer to Yahwah, and your sons and your daughters with you, as a portion for ever. It is a covenant of salt for ever before Yahwah to you, and to your seed with you.

20 Yahwah said to Aaron: You have no inheritance in their land, neither do you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Yisrayah.

21 Behold, I give all the tithe in Yisrayah to the children of Levi for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting.

22 From now on the children of Yisrayah will not come near the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.

23 But the Levites will do the service of the tent of meeting, and they will bear their iniquity. It is a statute for ever throughout your generations. Among the children of Yisrayah they have no inheritance.

24 For the tithe of the children of Yisrayah, which they offer as a heave-offering to Yahwah, I give to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I said to them: Among the children of Yisrayah they have no inheritance.

25 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

26 Moreover, speak to the Levites, and say to them; When you take of the children of Yisrayah the tithe I give you from them for your inheritance, then you will offer up a heave-offering of it for Yahwah, a tithe of the tithe [tenth of the tenth].

27 Your heave-offering is reckoned to you, as though it were the grain of the threshing-floor, and as the fullness of the winepress.

28 Thus you also will offer a heave-offering to Yahwah of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Yisrayah. Thereof you will give Yahwah's heave-offering to Aaron the priest.

29 Out of all your gifts you will offer every heave-offering of Yahwah, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.

30 Therefore you will say to them: When you heave the best thereof from it, it will be reckoned to the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor, and as the increase of the wine-press.

31 Eat it in every place, you and your households. It is your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting.

32 You will bear no sin by reason of it, when you heave the best thereof from it. You will not profane the holy things of the children of Yisrayah, that you not die.

Chapter 19

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe and to Aaron, saying:

2 This is the statute of the law and instruction Yahwah commands. Speak to the children of Yisrayah, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came a yoke.

3 Give her to Eleazar the priest. He will bring her forth without the camp, and one will kill her before his face.

4 Eleazar the priest will take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.

5 One will burn the heifer in his sight. He will burn her skin, her flesh, and her blood, with her dung,.

6 The priest will take cedar-wood, hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.

7 Then the priest will wash his clothes, and he will bathe his flesh in water. Afterward he will come into the camp, and the priest will be unclean until the even.

8 He who burns her will wash his clothes in water, bathe his flesh in water, and will be unclean until the even.

9 A man that is clean will gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place. It will be kept for the congregation of the children of Yisrayah for a water for impurity. It is a sin-offering.

10 He that gathers the ashes of the heifer will wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. It is to the children of Yisrayah, and to the stranger that sojourns among them, for a statute for ever.

11 He that touches the dead body of any man will be unclean seven days.

12 The same will purify himself therewith on the third day, and on the seventh day he will be clean. But if he not purify himself the third day, then the seventh day he will not be clean.

13 Whosoever touches a dead person, the body of a man that died, and not purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of Yahwah. That soul is cut off from Yisrayah. Because the water for impurity was not sprinkled upon him, he will be unclean. His uncleanness is yet upon him.

14 This is the instruction when a man dies in a tent. Every one that comes into the tent, and every one that is in the tent, will be unclean seven days.

15 Every open vessel, which has no covering bound upon it, is unclean.

16 Whosoever in the open field touches one that is slain with a sword, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, will be unclean seven days.

17 For the unclean they will take of the ashes of the burning of the sin-offering, and running water will be put thereto in a vessel.

18 A clean person will take hyssop, dip it in the water, sprinkle it upon the tent, upon all the vessels, upon the persons that were there, and upon him who touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave.

19 The clean person will sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day. On the seventh day he will purify him. He will wash his clothes, bathe himself in water, and will be clean at even.

20 But the man that is unclean, and will not purify himself, that soul is cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he defiled the sanctuary of Yahwah. The water for impurity was not sprinkled upon him, he is unclean.

21 It is a perpetual statute to them. He that sprinkled the water for impurity will wash his clothes, and he that touched the water for impurity will be unclean until even.

22 Whatsoever the unclean person touches is unclean. The soul that touches it will be unclean until even.

Chapter 20

1 The children of Yisrayah, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month. The people abode in Kadesh. Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 There was no water for the congregation. They assembled themselves together against Moshe, and against Aaron.

3 The people strove with Moshe, and spoke, saying: Would that we had died when our brothers died before Yahwah!

4 Why did you bring the assembly of Yahwah into this wilderness, that we should die here, we and our beasts?

5 Wherefore did you make us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates. Neither is there any water to drink.

6 Moshe and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces. The glory of Yahwah appeared to them.

7 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

8 Take the rod, and assemble the congregation. You, and Aaron your brother. Speak to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water. Bring forth water out of the rock to them. So you will give the congregation drink, and their cattle.

9 Moshe took the rod from before Yahwah, as He commanded him.

10 Moshe and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them: Hear now, you rebels. Will we bring you forth water out of this rock?

11 Moshe lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice. Water came forth abundantly. The congregation drank, and their cattle.

12 Yahwah said to Moshe, and Aaron: Because you did not believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Yisrayah, therefore you will not bring this assembly into the land I give them.

13 These are the waters of Meribah. Because the children of Yisrayah strove with Yahwah, and He was sanctified in them.

14 Moshe sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: Thus says your brother Yisrayah, you know all the travail that befell us.

15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers.

16 When we cried to Yahwah, He heard our voice, sent a malak, and brought us forth out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border.

17 I pray you, let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field, or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells. We will go along the king's highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand, nor to the left, until we pass your border.

18 Edom said to him: Do not pass through me, or else I will come out with the sword against you.

19 The children of Yisrayah said to him: We will go up by the highway. If we drink of your water, I and my cattle, then I will give the price thereof. Let me only, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.

20 He said: You will not pass through. Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.

21 Thus Edom refused to give Yisrayah passage through his border, so Yisrayah turned away from him.

22 They journeyed from Kadesh. The children of Yisrayah, even the whole congregation, came to mount Hor.

23 Yahwah spoke to Moshe and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying:

24 Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter into the land I gave to the children of Yisrayah, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

25 Take Aaron, and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to mount Hor.

26 Strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son. Aaron will be gathered to his people, and will die there.

27 Moshe did as Yahwah commanded. They went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

28 Moshe stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son. Aaron died there on the top of the mount. Moshe and Eleazar came down from the mount.

29 When all the congregation saw Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Yisrayah.

Chapter 21

1 The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Yisrayah came by the way of Atharim. He fought against Yisrayah, and took some of them captive.

2 Yisrayah vowed a vow to Yahwah, and said: If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 Yahwah hearkened to the voice of Yisrayah, and delivered up the Canaanites. They utterly destroyed them, and their cities. The name of the place was called Hormah.

4 They journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. The soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 The people spoke against Yahwah, and against Moshe: Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, and there is no water. Our soul loathes this light bread [manna].

6 Yahwah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Yisrayah died.

7 The people came to Moshe, and said: We sinned, we spoke against Yahwah, and against you. Pray to Yahwah, that He take away the serpents from us. Moshe prayed for the people.

8 Yahwah said to Moshe: Make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard. It will come to pass, every one that is bitten will live when he sees it.

9 Moshe made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard. It came to pass, if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 The children of Yisrayah journeyed, and camped in Oboth.

11 They journeyed from Oboth, and camped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 From there they journeyed, and camped in the valley of Zered.

13 From there they journeyed, and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that comes out of the border of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Yahwah: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,

15 the slope of the valleys that inclines toward the dwelling of Ar, and leans upon the border of Moab.

16 And from there they journeyed to Beer. That is the well whereof Yahwah said to Moshe: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Then Yisrayah sang this song: Spring up, O well. Sing you to it.

18 The well, which the princes digged, which the nobles of the people delved, with the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah.

19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel. And from Nahaliel to Bamoth.

20 And from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down upon the desert.

21 Yisrayah sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying:

22 Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard. We will not drink of the water of the wells. We will go by the king's highway, until we pass your border.

23 Sihon would not allow Yisrayah to pass through his border. Sihon gathered all his people together, went out against Yisrayah into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz. He fought against Yisrayah.

24 Yisrayah smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon. For the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 Yisrayah took all these cities. Yisrayah dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof.

26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who fought against the former king of Moab, and took all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon.

27 Wherefore those who speak in proverbs say: Come you to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be built, and established.

28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon. A flame from the city of Sihon. It devoured Ar of Moab. The masters of the high places of the Arnon.

29 Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh. He gave his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity. To Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 We shot at them. Heshbon is perished even to Dibon. We laid waste even to Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.

31 Thus Yisrayah dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 Moshe sent to spy out Jazer. They took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 They turned, and went up by the way of Bashan. Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

34 Yahwah said to Moshe: Do not fear him. I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

35 So they smote him, his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him remaining. They possessed his land.

Chapter 22

1 The children of Yisrayah journeyed, and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Yordan at Yericho [Jericho].

2 Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Yisrayah had done to the Amorites.

3 Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many. Moab was distressed because of the children of Yisrayah.

4 Moab said to the elders of Midian: Now this multitude will lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

5 He sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor [the magician], to Pethor [Mesopotamia], which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying: Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt. Behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide next to me.

6 Come now, I pray you, curse this people for me. They are too mighty for me. Maybe I will prevail, that we may smite them, and I may drive them out of the land. I know he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.

7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand. They came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.

8 He said to them: Lodge here tonight. I will bring you word as Yahwah speaks to me. The princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 Yahwah came to Balaam, and said: What men are these with you?

10 Balaam said to Yahwah: Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent to me, saying;

11 Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covers the face of the earth. Now, come curse them for me. Maybe I will be able to fight against them, and will drive them out.

12 Yahwah said to Balaam: Do not go with them. You will not curse the people, for they are blessed.

13 Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak: Get into your land. Yahwah refuses to give me leave to go with you.

14 The princes of Moab rose up, went to Balak, and said: Balaam refuses to come with us.

15 Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

16 They came to Balaam, and said to him: Thus says Balak the son of Zippor; I pray you, let nothing hinder you from coming to me.

17 I will promote you to very great honor, and I will do whatsoever you say to me. Come, I pray you, curse this people for me.

18 Balaam answered, and said to the servants of Balak: If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Yahwah my Father, to do less or more.

19 I pray you, tarry here tonight, that I may know what Yahwah will speak to me more.

20 Yahwah came to Balaam at night, and said to him: If the men are come to call you, rise up, go with them. But only the word which I speak to you, that you will do.

21 Balaam rose up in the morning, saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 Yahwah's anger was kindled because he went. The malak of Yahwah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 The ass saw the malak of Yahwah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand. The ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field. Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 Then the malak of Yahwah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 The ass saw the malak of Yahwah, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall. He smote her again.

26 The malak of Yahwah went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 The ass saw the malak of Yahwah, and she lay down under Balaam. Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.

28 Yahwah opened the mouth of the ass, and she said to Balaam: What did I do to you, that you smote me these three times?

29 Balaam said to the ass: Because you mocked me, I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you.

30 The ass said to Balaam: Am I not your ass upon which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Was I ever wont to do so to you? He said: Nay.

31 Then Yahwah opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the malak of Yahwah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand. He bowed his head, and fell on his face.

32 The malak of Yahwah said to him: Why did you smite your ass these three times? Behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because your way is perverse before me.

33 The ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times. Unless she had turned aside from me, surely by now I would have killed you, and saved her alive.

34 Balaam said to the malak of Yahwah: I sinned, for I did not know you stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displease you, I will get me back again.

35 The malak of Yahwah said to Balaam: Go with the men. But only the word I speak to you, that you will speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him to the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

37 Balak said to Balaam: Did I not earnestly send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?

38 Balaam said to Balak: Lo, I am come to you. Have I now any power at all to speak anything? I will speak the word Yahwah puts in my mouth.

39 Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.

40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

41 It came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of The LORD. He saw the utmost part of the people from there.

Chapter 23

1 Balaam said to Balak: Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks, and seven rams.

2 Balak did as Balaam said. Balak and Balaam offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

3 Balaam said to Balak: Stand by your burnt-offering, and I will go. Maybe Yahwah will come to meet me. I will tell you whatsoever He shows me. He went to a bare height.

4 Yahwah met Balaam. He said to Him: I prepared the seven altars, and I offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

5 Yahwah put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said: Return to Balak, and that you will speak.

6 He returned to him. Lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

7 He took up his parable, and said: Balak brought me from Aram [Syria]. The king of Moab from the mountains of the East. Come, curse Yaacob for me. Come, defy Yisrayah.

8 How will I curse someone Yahwah has not cursed? How will I defy someone Yahwah has not defied?

9 I see him from the top of the rocks, and I behold him from the hills. Lo, it is a people that dwells alone, and will not be reckoned among the nations.

10 Who can count the dust of Yaacob, or number the fourth part of Yisrayah? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!

11 Balak said to Balaam: What did you do to me? I took you to curse my enemies. Behold, you blessed them altogether.

12 He answered, and said: Must I not take heed to speak what Yahwah puts in my mouth?

13 Balak said to him: I pray you come with me to another place, from where you may see them. You will see but the utmost part of them, and will not see them all. Curse them from there.

14 He took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

15 He said to Balak: Stand here by your burnt-offering, while I meet Yahwah yonder.

16 Yahwah met Balaam, put a word in his mouth, and said: Return to Balak, and this you will speak.

17 He came to him. Lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. Balak said to him: What did Yahwah say?

18 He took up his parable, and said: Rise up, Balak, and hear. Hearken to me, you son of Zippor.

19 Yahwah is not a man, that He should lie. Neither the son of man, that He should repent. He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

20 Behold, I received commandment to bless. He blessed, and I cannot reverse it.

21 He did not behold iniquity in Yaacob. Neither did He see perverseness in Yisrayah. Yahwah his Father is with him, and the shout [teruah] of a king is among them.

22 Yahwah brings them forth out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild-ox.

23 Surely there is no enchantment with Yaacob. Neither is there any divination with Yisrayah. Now it will be said of Yaacob and of Yisrayah: What Yahwah has wrought!

24 Behold, the people rises up as a lioness. As a lion does he lift himself up. He will not lie down until he eat of the prey. And drink the blood of the slain.

25 Balak said to Balaam: Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.

26 But Balaam answered, and said to Balak: Did I not tell you, saying; All Yahwah speaks, that I must do?

27 Balak said to Balaam: Come now, I will take you to another place. Maybe it will please Yahwah that you may curse them from there.

28 Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks down upon the desert.

29 Balaam said to Balak: Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks, and seven rams.

30 Balak did as Balaam said, he offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Chapter 24

1 When Balaam saw it pleased Yahwah to bless Yisrayah, he did not go to meet with enchantments, as at the other times, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

2 Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Yisrayah dwelling according to their tribes. The Spirit of Yahwah came upon him.

3 He took up his parable, and said: Balaam the son of Beor says. The man whose eye was closed says.

4 He who hears the words of Yahwah says. Who sees the vision of the Almighty. Falling down, and having his eyes open.

5 How goodly are your tents, O Yaacob. Your tabernacles, O Yisrayah!

6 As valleys are they spread forth. As gardens by the river-side. As vines which Yahwah planted. As cedar-trees beside the waters.

7 Water will flow from his buckets. His seed will be in many waters. His king will be higher than Agag. His kingdom will be exalted.

8 Yahwah brings him forth out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild-ox. He will eat up the nations his adversaries, break their bones in pieces, and smite them through with his arrows.

9 He couched, he lay down as a lion. As a lioness, who will rouse him up? Blessed is every one that blesses you. Cursed is every one that curses you.

10 Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, I called you to curse my enemies. Behold, you altogether blessed them these three times.

11 Therefore now flee you to your place. I thought to promote you to great honor, but, lo, Yahwah kept you back from honor.

12 Balaam said to Balak: Did I not speak to your messengers that you sent to me, saying;

13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Yahwah, to do either good or bad of my own mind? What Yahwah speaks, that I will speak?

14 Behold, I go to my people. Come, I will tell you what this people will do to your people in the latter days.

15 He took up his parable, and said: Balaam the son of Beor says. The man whose eye was closed says.

16 He says, who hears the words of Yahwah. And knows the knowledge of the Most High. Who sees the vision of the Almighty. Falling down, and having his eyes open.

17 I see him, but not now. I behold him, but not near. There will come forth a star out of Yaacob. A scepter will rise out of Yisrayah, will smite through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Seth.

18 Edom will be a possession. Seir also will be a possession, who were his enemies. While Yisrayah does valiantly.

19 One out of Yaacob will have dominion. He will destroy the remnant from the city [Yerusalem].

20 He looked on Amalek, took up his parable, and said: Amalek was the first of the nations. But his latter end will come to destruction.

21 He looked on the Kenite, took up his parable, and said: Strong is your dwelling-place. Your nest is set in the rock.

22 Nevertheless Kain will be wasted. Until Asshur will carry you away captive.

23 He took up his parable, and said: Alas, who will live when Yahwah does this?

24 Ships will come from the coast of Kittim. They will afflict Asshur. And will afflict Eber. He also will come to destruction.

25 Balaam rose up, went, and returned to his place. Balak also went his way.

Chapter 25

1 Yisrayah abode in Shittim. The people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.

2 For they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

3 Yisrayah joined himself to The Lord-peor. The anger of Yahwah was kindled against Yisrayah.

4 Yahwah said to Moshe: Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahwah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahwah may turn away from Yisrayah.

5 Moshe said to the judges of Yisrayah: Every one and his men kill those who joined themselves to The Lord-peor.

6 Behold, one of the children of Yisrayah came, and brought a Midianitish woman to his brothers in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.

7 When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

8 He went after the man of Yisrayah into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisrayah, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Yisrayah.

9 Those who died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, turned my wrath away from the children of Yisrayah, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the children of Yisrayah in my jealousy.

12 Wherefore say: Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.

13 It will be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood. Because he was jealous for his Father, and made atonement for the children of Yisrayah.

14 Now the name of the man of Yisrayah that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.

15 The name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.

16 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them.

18 For they vex you with their wiles, by which they beguile you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

Chapter 26

1 It came to pass after the plague, Yahwah spoke to Moshe, and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying:

2 Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all that are able to go forth to war in Yisrayah.

3 Moshe and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Yordan at Yericho, saying:

4 Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward, as Yahwah commanded Moshe and the children of Yisrayah, that came forth out of the land of Egypt.

5 Reuben, the first-born of Yisrayah. The sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

6 of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

7 These are the families of the Reubenites; and those who were numbered of them were forty and three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

52 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

53 To these the land will be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

54 To the more you will give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you will give the less inheritance. To every one according to those that were numbered of him will his inheritance be given.

61 And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before Yahwah.

63 These are those who were numbered by Moshe and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Yisrayah in the plains of Moab by the Yordan at Yericho.

64 Among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moshe and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Yisrayah in the wilderness of Sinai.

65 For Yahwah said of them: They will surely die in the wilderness. There was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Yahushua the son of Nun.

Chapter 27

1 Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Yahusef, drew near. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

2 They stood before Moshe, before Eleazar the priest, before the princes, and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying:

3 Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against Yahwah in the company of Korah. He died in his own sin, and he had no sons.

4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.

5 Moshe brought their cause before Yahwah.

6 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You will surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers. You will cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.

8 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, saying: If a man die, and has no son, you will cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.

9 If he has no daughter, you will give his inheritance to his brothers.

10 If he has no brothers, you will give his inheritance to his father's brothers.

11 If his father has no brothers, then you will give his inheritance to his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he will possess it. To the children of Yisrayah it is a statute and an ordinance, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

12 Yahwah said to Moshe: Get you up into this mountain of Abarim. Behold the land I gave to the children of Yisrayah.

13 When you have seen it, you will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered.

14 You rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes. (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

15 Moshe spoke to Yahwah, saying:

16 Let Yahwah, the Father of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,

17 who may go out before them, who may come in before them, who may lead them out, and who may bring them in. That the congregation of Yahwah not be as sheep which have no shepherd.

18 Yahwah said to Moshe: Take Yahushua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand upon him.

19 Set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation. Give him a charge in their sight.

20 Put of your honor upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Yisrayah may obey.

21 He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Yahwah. At his word they will go out, and at his word they will come in, both he, and all the children of Yisrayah with him, even all the congregation.

22 Moshe did as Yahwah commanded him. He took Yahushua, set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation.

23 He laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as Yahwah spoke by Moshe.

Chapter 28

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Command the children of Yisrayah, and say to them; My oblation, my food for my offerings made by fire, of a sweet savor to me, you will observe to offer to me in their due season.

3 Say to them: This is the offering made by fire you will offer to Yahwah: he-lambs a year old without blemish, two day by day, for a continual burnt-offering.

4 The one lamb you will offer in the morning, and the other lamb you will offer between the evenings.

5 The tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil.

6 It is a continual burnt-offering, ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savor, an offering made by fire to Yahwah.

7 The drink-offering thereof will be the fourth part of a hin for the one lamb. In the holy place you will pour out a drink-offering of strong drink to Yahwah.

8 Offer the other lamb between the evenings. As the meal-offering of the morning, and as the drink-offering thereof, you will offer it, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahwah.

9 And on the sabbath day two he-lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, and the drink-offering thereof.

10 This is the burnt-offering of every sabbath, besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.

11 At the beginnings of your months you will offer a burnt-offering to Yahwah. Two young bullocks, and one ram, seven he-lambs a year old without blemish.

12 Three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, for each bullock. And two tenth parts of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, for the one ram.

13 A tenth part of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal-offering to every lamb. For a burnt-offering of a sweet savor, an offering made by fire to Yahwah.

14 Their drink-offerings will be half a hin of wine for a bullock, and the third part of a hin for the ram, and the fourth part of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt-offering of every month throughout the months of the year.

15 And one he-goat for a sin-offering to Yahwah. It will be offered besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.

16 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is Yahwah's passover.

17 On the fifteenth day of this month will be a feast. Seven days unleavened bread will be eaten.

18 The first day is a holy convocation, you will do no servile work.

19 But you will offer an offering made by fire, a burnt-offering to Yahwah. Two young bullocks, one ram, and seven he-lambs a year old. They will be without blemish to you.

20 Their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil. Three tenth parts you will offer for a bullock, and two tenth parts for the ram.

21 A tenth part you will offer for every lamb of the seven lambs.

22 One he-goat for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you.

23 Besides these offer the burnt-offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt-offering.

24 After this manner you will offer daily, for seven days, the food of the offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahwah. It will be offered besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.

25 On the seventh day you will have a holy convocation, you will do no servile work.

26 Also in the day of the first-fruits, when you offer a new meal-offering to Yahwah in your feast of weeks, you will have a holy convocation, you will do no servile work.

27 You will offer a burnt-offering for a sweet savor to Yahwah. Two young bullocks, one ram, seven he-lambs a year old.

28 Their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for each bullock, two tenth parts for the one ram,

29 a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs,

30 one he-goat, to make atonement for you.

31 Besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, you will offer them (they will be without blemish to you), and their drink-offerings.

Chapter 29

40 Moshe told the children of Yisrayah according to all Yahwah commanded Moshe.

Chapter 30

1 Moshe spoke to the heads of the tribes of the children of Yisrayah, saying: This is the thing Yahwah commands.

2 When a man vows a vow to Yahwah, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he will not break his word. He will do according to all that proceeded out of his mouth.

3 Also when a woman vows a vow to Yahwah, and binds herself by a bond, being in her father's house, in her youth,

4 and her father hears her vow, and her bond wherewith she bound her soul, and her father holds his peace at her; then all her vows will stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul will stand.

5 But if her father disallow her in the day he hears, none of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she bound her soul, will stand. Yahwah will forgive her, because her father disallowed her.

6 If she is married to a husband while her vows are upon her, or the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul,

7 and her husband hear it, and hold his peace at her in the day he hears it; then her vows will stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her soul will stand.

8 But if her husband disallow her in the day he hears it, then he will make void her vow which is upon her, and the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul. Yahwah will forgive her.

9 But the vow of a widow, or of her that is divorced, even everything wherewith she has bound her soul, will stand against her.

10 If she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath,

11 and her husband heard it, held his peace at her, and did not disallow her; then all her vows will stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul will stand.

12 But if her husband made them null and void in the day he heard them, then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, will not stand. Her husband made them void, and Yahwah will forgive her.

13 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.

14 If her husband altogether holds his peace at her from day to day, then he establishes all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her. He established them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.

15 But if he will make them null and void after he heard them, then he will bear her iniquity.

16 These are the statutes Yahwah commanded Moshe, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father's house.

Chapter 31

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Avenge the children of Yisrayah of the Midianites. Afterward you will be gathered to your people.

3 Moshe spoke to the people, saying: Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahwah's vengeance on Midian.

4 Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Yisrayah, you will send to the war.

5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Yisrayah, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6 Moshe sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe. Them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm [teruah] in his hand.

7 They warred against Midian, as Yahwah commanded Moshe. And they killed every male.

8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.

9 The children of Yisrayah took the women of Midian captive, and their little ones. They took for a prey all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods.

10 They burnt with fire all their cities in the places wherein they dwelt, and all their camps.

11 They took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of beast.

12 They brought the captives, the prey, and the spoil, to Moshe, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Yisrayah, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Yordan at Yericho.

13 Moshe, Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.

14 Moshe was angry with the officers of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.

15 Moshe said to them: Did you save all the women alive?

16 Behold, these caused the children of Yisrayah, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahwah in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahwah.

17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that has known man by lying with him.

18 But all the women-children, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19 Camp outside the camp seven days. Whosoever killed any person, and whosoever touched any dead, purify yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

20 As to every garment, all that is made of skin, all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood, you will purify yourselves.

21 Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle: This is the statute of the law Yahwah commanded Moshe.

22 However the gold, the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23 everything that may abide the fire, you will make to go through the fire, and it will be clean. Nevertheless it will be purified with the water for impurity, and all that does not abide the fire you will make to go through the water.

24 Wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be clean. Afterward you will come into the camp.

25 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, you, Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation.

27 Divide the prey into two parts. Between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.

28 Levy a tribute to Yahwah of the men of war who went out to battle. One soul of five hundred, both of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the flocks.

29 Take it of their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahwah's heave-offering.

30 Of the children of Yisrayah's half, take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the flocks, even of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites that keep the charge of the tabernacle of Yahwah.

31 Moshe and Eleazar the priest did as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

32 Now the prey, over and above the booty the men of war took, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,

33 threescore and twelve thousand oxen,

34 threescore and one thousand asses,

35 and thirty and two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.

36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep.

37 Yahwah's tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.

38 The oxen were thirty and six thousand, of which Yahwah's tribute was threescore and twelve.

39 The asses were thirty thousand and five hundred, of which Yahwah's tribute was threescore and one.

40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of whom Yahwah's tribute was thirty and two persons.

41 Moshe gave the tribute, which was Yahwah's heave-offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

42 The children of Yisrayah's half, which Moshe divided off from the men that warred,

43 the congregation's half was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred sheep,

44 thirty and six thousand oxen,

45 thirty thousand and five hundred asses,

46 and sixteen thousand persons.

47 Of the children of Yisrayah's half, Moshe took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them to the Levites who kept the charge of the tabernacle of Yahwah, as Yahwah commanded Moshe.

48 The officers that were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moshe.

49 They said to Moshe: Your servants took the sum of the men of war that are under our charge, and there lacks not one man of us.

50 We brought Yahwah's oblation, what every man got, of jewels of gold, ankle-chains, bracelets, signet-rings, ear-rings, and armlets, to make atonement for our souls before Yahwah.

51 Moshe and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.

52 All the gold of the heave-offering they offered up to Yahwah, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

53 (For the men of war took booty, every man for himself.)

54 Moshe and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, for a memorial for the children of Yisrayah before Yahwah.

Chapter 32

1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle. They saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead. Behold, the place was a place for cattle.

2 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moshe, to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying:

3 Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

4 the land Yahwah smote before the congregation of Yisrayah, is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle.

5 They said: If we found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not bring us over the Yordan.

6 Moshe said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben: Your brothers go to the war, and you will sit here?

7 Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Yisrayah from going over into the land Yahwah gave them?

8 Thus your fathers did, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

9 When they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Yisrayah, that they should not go into the land Yahwah gave them.

10 Yahwah's anger was kindled in that day, and He swore, saying:

11 Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, will see the land I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Yaacob, because they did not wholly follow me.

12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Yahushua the son of Nun, because they wholly followed Yahwah.

13 Yahwah's anger was kindled against Yisrayah, and He made them wander to and fro in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that did evil in the sight of Yahwah was consumed.

14 Behold, you are risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahwah toward Yisrayah.

15 For if you turn away from after Him, He will yet again leave them in the wilderness. You will destroy all this people.

16 They came near to him, and said: We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones.

17 But we ourselves are ready to go armed before the children of Yisrayah, until we bring them to their place. Our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

18 We will not return to our houses until the children of Yisrayah have inherited every man his inheritance.

19 We will not inherit with them on the other side of the Yordan, and forward, because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Yordan eastward.

20 Moshe said to them: If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before Yahwah to the war,

21 and every armed man of you will pass over the Yordan before Yahwah, until He drives out His enemies from before Him,

22 and the land is subdued before Yahwah; then afterward you will return, be guiltless towards Yahwah, and towards Yisrayah. This land will be for a possession to you before Yahwah.

23 But if you will not do so, behold, you sinned against Yahwah. Be sure your sin will find you out.

24 Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep. Do what proceeded out of your mouth.

25 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moshe, saying: Your servants will do as my master commands.

26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, will be there in the cities of Gilead.

27 But your servants will pass over to battle before Yahwah, every man armed for war, as my master says.

28 So Moshe gave charge concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Yahushua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Yisrayah.

29 Moshe said to them: If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass over the Yordan with you, every man is armed to battle before Yahwah, and the land is subdued before you, then you will give them the land of Gilead for a possession.

30 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they will have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

31 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: As Yahwah said to your servants, so we will do.

32 We will pass over armed before Yahwah into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Yordan.

33 Moshe gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Manasseh the son of Yahusef, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities thereof with their borders, even the cities of the land round about.

34 The children of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,

35 Atrothshophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

36 Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran. Fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

37 The children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,

38 Nebo, Baal-meon, and Sibmah (their names being changed). They gave other names to the cities they built.

39 The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.

40 Moshe gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh. He dwelt therein.

41 Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the towns thereof, and called them Havvoth-jair.

42 Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

38 Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor at the commandment of Yahwah, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Yisrayah were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month.

39 Aaron was a hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in mount Hor.

50 Yahwah spoke to Moshe in the plains of Moab by the Yordan at Yericho, saying:

51 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them; When you pass over the Yordan into the land of Canaan,

52 drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their figured stones, destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places.

53 Take possession of the land, and dwell therein. I give the land to you to possess it.

54 You will inherit the land by lot according to your families. To the more you will give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you will give the less inheritance. Wheresoever the lot falls to any man, that will be his. According to the tribes of your fathers you will inherit.

55 But if you will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those you let remain of them will be as pricks in your eyes, and as thorns in your sides. They will vex you in the land wherein you dwell.

56 It will come to pass, as I thought to do to them, so I will do to you.

Chapter 34

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

2 Command the children of Yisrayah. Say to them: When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that will fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to the borders thereof),

3 your south quarter will be from the wilderness of Zin along by the side of Edom, and your south border will be from the end of the Salt Sea eastward;

4 and your border will turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and the goings out thereof will be southward of Kadesh-barnea; and it will go forth to Hazar-addar, and pass along to Azmon;

5 and the border will turn about from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and the goings out thereof will be at the sea.

6 And for the western border, you will have the great sea and the border thereof: this will be your west border.

7 This will be your north border: from the great sea you will mark out for you mount Hor;

8 from mount Hor you will mark out to the entrance of Hamath; and the goings out of the border will be at Zedad;

9 and the border will go forth to Ziphron, and the goings out thereof will be at Hazar-enan: this will be your north border.

10 Mark out your east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham;

11 and the border will go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border will go down, and will reach to the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward;

12 and the border will go down to the Yordan, and the goings out thereof will be at the Salt Sea. This will be your land according to the borders thereof round about.

13 Moshe commanded the children of Yisrayah, saying: This is the land you will inherit by lot, which Yahwah commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-of-the-tribe.

14 For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers' houses, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers' houses, have received, and half of the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance.

15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Yordan at Yericho eastward, toward the sunrising.

16 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

17 These are the names of the men that will divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Yahushua the son of Nun.

18 Take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance.

19 These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Yahudah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

20 Of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.

21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.

22 Of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli.

23 Of the children of Yahusef: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod.

24 Of the tribe of the children of Ephrayim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.

25 Of the tribe of the children of Zebulun a prince, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.

26 Of the tribe of the children of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan.

27 Of the tribe of the children of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.

28 Of the tribe of the children of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.

29 These are those whom Yahwah commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Yisrayah in the land of Canaan.

Chapter 35

1 Yahwah spoke to Moshe in the plains of Moab by the Yordan at Yericho, saying:

2 Command the children of Yisrayah, that they give cities to dwell in to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession, and suburbs for the cities round about them you will give to the Levites.

3 The cities they will have to dwell in and their suburbs will be for their cattle, for their substance, and for all their beasts.

4 The suburbs of the cities, which you will give to the Levites, will be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.

5 Measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, for the south side two thousand cubits, for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This will be to them the suburbs of the cities.

6 The cities you give to the Levites will be the six cities of refuge, which you will give for the manslayer to flee unto. Besides them you will give forty and two cities.

7 All the cities you give to the Levites will be forty and eight cities. Them you will give with their suburbs.

8 Concerning the cities you give of the possession of the children of Yisrayah, from the many you will take many, and from the few you will take few. Every one according to his inheritance he inherits will give of his cities to the Levites.

9 Yahwah spoke to Moshe, saying:

10 Speak to the children of Yisrayah, and say to them; When you pass over the Yordan into the land of Canaan,

11 appoint cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer that kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

12 The cities will be to you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer not die, until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

13 The cities you give will be for you six cities of refuge.

14 Give three cities beyond the Yordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, they are cities of refuge.

15 For the children of Yisrayah, for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them, these six cities will be for refuge, that every one that kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

16 But if he smote him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer will surely be put to death.

17 If he smote him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer will surely be put to death.

18 Or if he smote him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer will surely be put to death.

19 The avenger of blood will himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he will put him to death.

20 If he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died,

21 or smote him with his hand in enmity, so that he died, he that smote him will surely be put to death. He is a murderer, the avenger of blood will put the murderer to death when he meets him.

22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him anything without lying in wait,

23 or with any stone, whereby a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it upon him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm;

24 then the congregation will judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances.

25 The congregation will deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation will restore him to his city of refuge, whither he was fled. He will dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

26 But if the manslayer will at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he flees,

27 and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer, he will not be guilty of blood,

28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the manslayer will return into the land of his possession.

29 These things are for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations, in all your dwellings.

30 Whoso kills any person, the murderer will be slain at the mouth of witnesses. But one witness will not testify against any person that he die.

31 Moreover you will take no ransom for the life of a murderer that is guilty of death, but he will surely be put to death.

32 You will take no ransom for him that is fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

33 So you will not pollute the land wherein you are. For blood, it pollutes the land. No expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed therein, except by the blood of him who shed it.

34 Do not defile the land you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell. For I, Yahwah, dwell in the midst of the children of Yisrayah.

Chapter 36

1 The heads of the fathers' houses of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Yahusef, came near, spoke before Moshe, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' houses of the children of Yisrayah.

2 They said: Yahwah commanded my master to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Yisrayah. My master was commanded by Yahwah to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

3 If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Yisrayah, then their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they will belong. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

4 When the jubilee of the children of Yisrayah will be, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they will belong. So will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.

5 Moshe commanded the children of Yisrayah according to the word of Yahwah, saying: The tribe of the sons of Yahusef speaks right.

6 This is the thing Yahwah commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying: Let them be married to whom they think best, only they will be married into the family of the tribe of their father.

7 So will no inheritance of the children of Yisrayah remove from tribe to tribe, for the children of Yisrayah will cleave every one to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

8 Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Yisrayah, will be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Yisrayah may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.

9 So no inheritance will remove from one tribe to another tribe. For the tribes of the children of Yisrayah will cleave every one to his own inheritance.

10 Even as Yahwah commanded Moshe, so the daughters of Zelophehad did.

11 Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father's brothers' sons.

12 They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Yahusef. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

13 These are the comandments and the ordinances Yahwah commanded by Moshe to the children of Yisrayah in the plains of Moab by the Yordan at Yericho.
