The Book of Amos

Chapter 1

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Yisrayah in the days of Uzziyah king of Yahudah [Judah], and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Yahuash king of Yisrayah [Israel], two years before the earthquake.

2 He said: Yahwah [YHWH] will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from Yerusalem [Jerusalem]. The pastures of the shepherds will mourn, and the top of Carmel will wither.

3 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Damascus [Syria], yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.

4 I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.

5 I will break the bar of Damascus, cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him who holds the sceptre from the house of Eden. The people of Syria will go into captivity to Kir [Amos 9:7]: says Yahwah.

6 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They carried away captive the whole people, to deliver them up to Edom.

7 I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it will devour their palaces.

8 I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him who holds the sceptre from Ashkelon. I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah.

9 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They delivered up the whole people to Edom, and did not remember the brotherly covenant.

10 I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour their palaces.

11 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Edom [children of Esau], yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. He pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity. His anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.

12 I will send a fire upon Teman, and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon [son of Lot], yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border.

14 I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour their palaces, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.

15 Their king will go into captivity, he and his princes together: says Yahwah.

Chapter 2

1 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Moab [son of Lot], yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. He burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

2 I will send a fire upon Moab, it will devour the palaces of Kerioth. Moab will die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

3 I will cut off the judge from there, and kill all the princes with him: says Yahwah.

4 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Yahudah, yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They reject the Law of Yahwah, do not keep His statutes, and their lies (after which their fathers walked) cause them to err.

5 I will send a fire upon Yahudah, it will devour the palaces of Yerusalem.

6 Thus says Yahwah: For three transgressions of Yisrayah, yea, for four, I will not turn away their punishment. They sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes.

7 They pant after the poor who throw the dust of the earth on their heads, and they turn aside the way of the meek. A man and his father go to the same maiden, to profane my holy Name.

8 They lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of such as are fined.

9 I destroyed the Amorite before them (whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks). I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

10 I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

11 I raised up of you sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not so, O you children of Yisrayah: says Yahwah?

12 But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying: Do not prophesy.

13 Behold, I will press you in your place, as a cart presses that is full of sheaves.

14 Flight will perish from the swift, the strong will not strengthen his force, nor will the mighty deliver himself,

15 nor will he who handles the bow stand, he who is swift of foot will not deliver himself, nor will he who rides the horse deliver himself.

16 He who is courageous among the mighty will flee away naked in that day: says Yahwah.

Chapter 3

1 Hear this word Yahwah spoke against you, O children of Yisrayah, against the whole family I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:

2 You only do I know of all the families of the earth, therefore I will visit all your iniquities upon you.

3 Shall two walk together, except they agree?

4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he takes nothing?

5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is set for him? Shall a snare spring up from the ground, and take nothing at all?

6 Shall the trumpet be blown in a city, and the people not be afraid? Shall evil befall a city, and Yahwah did not do it?

7 Surely the Heavenly Father Yahwah will do nothing, except He reveal His secret to His servants the prophets.

8 The lion roars, who will not fear? The Heavenly Father Yahwah speaks, who can but prophesy?

9 Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, say: Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria. Behold what great tumults are there, and what oppressions in the midst of it.

10 For they do not know to do right: says Yahwah. They store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

11 Therefore thus says the Heavenly Father Yahwah: An adversary there will be, even round about the land. He will bring down your strength from you, and your palaces will be plundered.

12 Thus says Yahwah: As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so will the children of Yisrayah be rescued who sit in Samaria in the corner of a couch, and on the silken cushions of a bed.

13 Hear, testify against the house of Yaacob: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah, the Father of hosts.

14 For in the day I visit the transgressions of Yisrayah upon him, I will also visit the altars of Beth-el. The horns of the altar will be cut off, and fall to the ground.

15 I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house. The houses of ivory will perish, and the great houses will have an end: says Yahwah.

Chapter 4

1 Hear this word, you pigs of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters: Bring, and let us drink.

2 The Heavenly Father Yahwah swore by His holiness. Lo, the days come upon you, they will take you away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks.

3 You will go out at the breaches, every one straight before her, and you will cast yourselves into Harmon: says Yahwah.

4 Come to Beth-el, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days;

5 offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened; proclaim freewill-offerings and publish them; for this pleases you, O you children of Yisrayah: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah.

6 I gave you cleanness of teeth [hunger] in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, yet you do not return to me: says Yahwah.

7 I also withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest. I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it to not rain upon another city. One piece was rained upon, and the piece where it did not rain withered.

8 So two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water, and were not satisfied, yet you do not return to me: says Yahwah.

9 I smote you with blasting and mildew. The palmer-worm devoured the multitude of your gardens, your vineyards, your fig-trees, and your olive-trees, yet you do not return to me: says Yahwah.

10 I sent the pestilence among you after the manner of Egypt. Your young men I killed with the sword, and carried away your horses. I made the stench of your camp to come up even into your nostrils. Yet you do not return to me: says Yahwah.

11 I overthrew cities among you, as when Yahwah overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a brand plucked out of the burning, yet you do not return to me: says Yahwah.

12 Therefore I will do so to you, O Yisrayah, and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your Maker, O Yisrayah.

13 Lo, He forms the mountains, creates the wind, declares to man what is his thought, makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the Earth. Yahwah, the Father of hosts, is His Name.

Chapter 5

1 Hear this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Yisrayah.

2 The virgin of Yisrayah is fallen, she will not rise. She is cast down upon her land, there is none to raise her up.

3 For thus says the Heavenly Father Yahwah to the house of Yisrayah: The city that went forth a thousand will have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred will have ten left.

4 For thus says Yahwah to the house of Yisrayah: Seek Me, and you will live. Do not seek Beth-el [house of God], nor enter into Gilgal, and do not pass to Beersheba. Gilgal will surely go into captivity, and Beth-el will come to nothing.

6 Seek Yahwah, and you will live, unless He break out like fire in the house of Yahusef, devour it, and there is none to quench it in Beth-el.

7 You who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

8 seek Him who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns the shadow of death into the morning. He makes the day dark with night, calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the face of the earth (Yahwah is His Name).

9 He brings sudden destruction upon the strong, so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

10 They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks uprightly.

11 Forasmuch therefore as you trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat; you build houses of hewn stone, but you will not dwell in them; you planted pleasant vineyards, but you will not drink the wine.

12 I know how many your transgressions are, and how mighty your sins are. You afflict the just, take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate from their right.

13 Therefore he who is prudent will keep silence in such a time, for it is an evil time.

14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live. So Yahwah, the Father of hosts, will be with you, as you say.

15 Hate the evil, love the good, and establish justice in the gate. It may be that Yahwah, the Father of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Yahusef [Joseph].

16 Therefore thus says Yahwah, the Father of hosts: Wailing will be in all the broad ways. They will say in all the streets: Alas! Alas! They will call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful in lamentation to wailing.

17 In all vineyards will be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you: says Yahwah.

18 Woe to you who desire the day of Yahwah! Why would you have the day of Yahwah? It is darkness, and not light.

19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him. Or went into the house, leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

20 Shall the day of Yahwah not be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

22 Yea, though you offer me your burnt-offerings and meal-offerings, I do not accept them, neither do I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts.

23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs, for I do not hear the melody of your viols.

24 But let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

25 Did you bring sacrifices and offerings to Me in the wilderness forty years, O house of Yisrayah?

26 Yea, you bore the tabernacle of Moloch your king, the shrine of Sikkuth, and Chiun, the star of your gods, which you made to yourselves.

27 Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus: says Yahwah, whose Name is the Father of hosts.

Chapter 6

1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Yisrayah come!

2 Pass to Calneh, and see. From there go to Hamath the great. Go down to Gath of the Philistines, are they better than these kingdoms? Or is their border greater than your border?

3 You put the evil day far away, and cause the seat of violence to come near.

4 Those who lie upon beds of ivory, stretch themselves upon their couches, eat the lambs out of the flock, the calves out of the midst of the stall;

5 who sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;

6 who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Yahusef.

7 Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive, and the revelry of those who stretched themselves will pass away.

8 The Heavenly Father Yahwah swore by Himself: says Yahwah, the Father of hosts. I abhor the excellency of Yaacob, and hate his palaces, therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.

9 It will come to pass, if there remains ten men in one house, they will die.

10 When a man's uncle takes him up, even he who burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house: Is there yet any with you? He will say: No. Then he will say: Hold your peace, for we may not make mention of the Name of Yahwah.

11 Behold, Yahwah commands, and the great house will be smitten with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

12 Shall horses run upon the rock? Will one plow there with oxen? You turn justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood.

13 You who rejoice in a thing of nothing, say: Did we not take horns to us by our own strength?

14 Behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Yisrayah: says Yahwah, the Father of hosts. They will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the wadi Arabah.

Chapter 7

1 Thus the Heavenly Father Yahwah showed me; behold, He formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth. Lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.

2 It came to pass that, when they made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said: O Heavenly Father Yahwah, forgive, I beg you. How will Yaacob stand? For he is small.

3 Yahwah repented concerning this. It will not be: says Yahwah.

4 Then the Heavenly Father Yahwah showed me; behold, the Heavenly Father Yahwah called to content by fire. It devoured the great deep, and would have eaten up the land.

5 Then I said: O Heavenly Father Yahwah, cease, I beg you. How will Yaacob stand? For he is small.

6 Yahwah repented concerning this. This also will not be: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah.

7 Then He showed me; behold, Yahwah stood beside a wall made by a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in His hand.

8 Yahwah said to me: Amos, what do you see? I said: A plumb-line. Then Yahwah said: Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Yisrayah, I will not pass by them again any more.

9 The high places of Isaac are desolate, the sanctuaries of Yisrayah are laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amazyah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Yisrayah, saying: Amos conspires against you in the midst of the house of Yisrayah. The land is not able to bear all his words.

11 For thus Amos said: Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Yisrayah will surely be led away captive out of his land.

12 Also Amazyah said to Amos: O you seer, go, flee you away into the land of Yahudah, and eat bread there, prophesy there.

13 Do not prophesy again any more at Beth-el, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.

14 Then Amos answered, and said to Amazyah: I was no prophet, nor was I a prophet's son. I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore-trees.

15 Yahwah took me from following the flock, and Yahwah said to me: Go, prophesy to my people Yisrayah.

16 Now therefore hear the word of Yahwah. You say: Do not prophesy against Yisrayah, and do not drop your word against the house of Isaac.

17 Therefore thus says Yahwah: Your wife will be a harlot in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided by line, you yourself will die in a land that is unclean, and Yisrayah will surely be led away captive out of his land.

Chapter 8

1 Thus the Heavenly Father Yahwah showed me; behold, a basket of summer fruit.

2 He said: Amos, what do you see? I said: A basket of summer fruit. Then Yahwah said to me: The end is come upon my people Yisrayah. I will not pass by them again any more.

3 The songs of the temple will be wailings in that day: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah. The dead bodies will be many, in every place they will cast them forth with silence.

4 Hear this, O you who would swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail

5 (saying: When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? The sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, the shekel great, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit,

6 that we may buy the poor for silver, the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat?).

7 Yahwah swore by the excellency of Yaacob: Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8 Shall the land not tremble for this, and every one mourn who dwells there? Yea, it will rise up wholly like the River, it will be troubled and sink again, like the River of Egypt.

9 It will come to pass in that day: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah; I will cause the sun to go down at noon. I will darken the earth in the clear day.

10 I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation. I will bring sackcloth upon all loins, baldness upon every head, I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end of a bitter day.

11 Behold, the days come: says the Heavenly Father Yahwah; I will send a famine in the land. Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahwah.

12 They will wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they will run to and fro to seek the word of Yahwah, and will not find it.

13 In that day the fair virgins and the young men will faint for thirst.

14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria (saying: As your god lives, O Dan. And: As the way of Beer-sheba lives), they will fall, and never rise up again.

Chapter 9

1 I saw Yahwah standing beside the altar. He said: Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake. Break them in pieces on the head of all of them, I will kill the last of them with the sword. There will not one of them flee away, and there will not one of them escape.

2 Though they dig into the grave, there my hand will take them. Though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

3 Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there. Though they hide from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

4 Though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it will kill them. I will set my eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

5 For the Heavenly Father, Yahwah of hosts, is He who touches the land and it melts. All who dwell there will mourn, it will rise up wholly like the River, and will sink again, like the River of Egypt.

6 He built His chambers in the heavens, and founded His vault upon the earth. He calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the face of the earth. Yahwah is His Name.

7 Are you not as the children of the Ethiopians to me, O children of Yisrayah: says Yahwah? Did I not bring Yisrayah up out of the land of Egypt [Exodus], the Philistines from Caphtor [Cyprus, Jubilees 24:30, Jeremiah 47:4], and the Syrians from Kir? [Amos 1:5]

8 Behold, the eyes of the Heavenly Father Yahwah are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth, save that I will not utterly destroy the house of Yaacob: says Yahwah.

9 Lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Yisrayah among all the nations, like as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet the least kernel will not fall upon the earth.

10 All the sinners of my people will die by the sword, who say: The evil will not overtake nor meet us.

11 In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches. I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old,

12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations that are called by my Name: says Yahwah who does this.

13 Behold, the days come: says Yahwah; the plowman will overtake the reaper, the treader of grapes him who sows seed, the mountains will drop sweet wine, and all the hills will melt.

14 I will bring back the captivity of my people Yisrayah. They will build the waste cities, and inhabit them. They will plant vineyards, and drink the wine. They will also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

15 I will plant them upon their land, and they will not be plucked up out of their land which I give them: says Yahwah your Father.
