The Book of Zephanyah [Zephaniah]

Chapter 1

1 The Word of Yahwah came to Zephanyah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedalyah, the son of Amaryah, the son of Hezekyah, in the days of Josyah the son of Amon, king of Yahudah.

2 I will utterly consume all things from off the face of the ground: says Yahwah.

3 I will consume man and beast, I will consume the birds of the heavens, the fishes of the sea, the stumblingblocks with the wicked, and I will cut off man from off the face of the ground: says Yahwah.

4 I will stretch out my hand upon Yahudah, and upon all the inhabitants of Yerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of The LORD from this place, the name of the Chemarim with the priests,

5 those who worship the host of heaven upon the housetops, those who worship, who swear to God and swear by Malcam,

6 those who are turned back from following Yahwah, and those who do not seek Yahwah, nor inquire after Him.

7 Hold your peace at the presence of the Heavenly Father Yahwah. For the day of Yahwah is at hand, Yahwah prepares a sacrifice, He consecrates His guests.

8 It will come to pass in the day of Yahwah's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, the king's sons, and all such as are clothed with foreign apparel.

9 In that day I will punish all those who leap over the threshold, who fill their master's house with violence and deceit.

10 Yahwah says: In that day there will be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

11 Wail, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the people of Canaan are undone, all those who were laden with silver are cut off.

12 It will come to pass at that time, I will search Yerusalem with lamps. I will punish the men who are settled on their lees, who say in their heart: Yahwah will not do good, neither will He do evil.

13 Their wealth will become a spoil, and their houses a desolation. Yea, they will build houses, but will not inhabit them. They will plant vineyards, but will not drink the wine.

14 The great day of Yahwah is near, it is near and hurrys greatly, even the voice of the day of Yahwah. The mighty man cries bitterly.

15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness.

16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities, and against the high battlements.

17 I will bring distress upon men. They will walk like blind men, because they sinned against Yahwah. Their blood will be poured out as dust, and their flesh as dung.

18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Yahwah's wrath. The whole land will be devoured by the fire of His jealousy. He will make an end, yea, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

Chapter 2

1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation that has no shame,

2 before the decree brings forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Yahwah comes upon you, before the day of Yahwah's anger comes upon you.

3 Seek Yahwah, all you meek of the earth, who keep His ordinances. Seek righteousness, seek meekness, it may be you will be hid in the day of Yahwah's anger.

4 For Gaza will be forgotten, and Ashkelon a desolation. They will drive out Ashdod at noonday, and Ekron will be rooted up.

5 Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea-coast, the nation of the Cherethites! The Word of Yahwah is against you, O Canaan, the land of the Philistines. I will destroy you, that there is no inhabitant.

6 The sea-coast will be pastures, with cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.

7 The coast is for the remnant of the house of Yahudah. They will feed their flocks there, in the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down in the evening. Yahwah their Father will visit them, and bring back their captivity.

8 I heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, with which they reproach my people, and magnify themselves against their border.

9 Therefore as I live: says Yahwah of hosts, the Father of Yisrayah; Surely Moab will be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon [children of Lot] as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, saltpits, and a perpetual desolation. The residue of my people will make a prey of them, and the remnant of my nation will inherit them.

10 This they will have for their pride, because they reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Yahwah of hosts.

11 Yahwah will be terrible to them. He will famish all the gods of the earth. Men will worship Him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the nations.

12 You Ethiopians also, you will be slain by my sword.

13 He will stretch out His hand against the north, destroy Assyria, and make Nineveh a desolation, dry like the wilderness.

14 Herds will lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations. Both the pelican and the porcupine will lodge in the capitals there, their voice will sing in the windows, desolation will be in the thresholds, for He laid the cedar-work bare.

15 This is the joyous city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart: I am, and there is none besides me. How is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! Everyone who passes by her will hiss, and wag his hand.

Chapter 3

1 Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted! To the oppressing city!

2 She did not obey the voice, she did not receive correction, she did not trust in Yahwah, she did not draw near to her Father.

3 Her princes in the midst of her are roaring lions, her judges are evening wolves, they leave nothing till the next day.

4 Her prophets are light and treacherous persons, her priests profane the sanctuary, they do violence to the law.

5 Yahwah in the midst of her is righteous, He will not do iniquity. Every morning He brings His justice to light, He does not fail, but the unjust know no shame.

6 I cut off nations, their battlements are desolate, I made their streets waste, so that none pass by, their cities are destroyed, so there is no man, so there is no inhabitant.

7 I said: Only fear Me. Receive correction, so her dwelling will not be cut off, according to all I appointed concerning her. But they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

8 Yahwah says: Therefore wait for Me until the day I rise up to the prey. My determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour my indignation upon them, even all my fierce anger. All the earth will be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

9 Then I will turn to the peoples of a pure language, that they may all call upon the Name of Yahwah, to serve Him with one consent.

10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my worshippers, even the daughter of my dispersed, will bring my offering.

11 In that day you will not be put to shame for all your doings, when you transgressed against Me. I will take your proudly exulting ones away out of the midst of you, and you will not be haughty in my holy mountain.

12 I will leave an afflicted and poor people in the midst of you, and they will take refuge in the Name of Yahwah.

13 The remnant of Yisrayah will not do iniquity, nor speak lies. Neither will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth. They will feed, lie down, and none will make them afraid.

14 Sing, O daughter of Zion. Shout, O Yisrayah. Be glad, rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Yerusalem.

15 Yahwah took away your judgments, He cast out your enemy. The King of Yisrayah, even Yahwah, is in the midst of you. You will not fear evil any more.

16 In that day it will be said to Yerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion, let your hands not be slack.

17 Yahwah your Father is in the midst of you, a mighty one who will save. He rejoices over you with joy. He rests in His love. He joys over you with singing.

18 I will gather those who sorrow for the solemn assembly, who were of you, to whom the burden upon her was a reproach.

19 Behold, at that time I will deal with all those who afflict you. I will save that which is lame, gather that which was driven away, and I will make them a praise and a name, whose shame was in all the earth.

20 At that time I will bring you in, and at that time I will gather you. I will make you a name and a praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I bring back your captivity before your eyes, says Yahwah.
